Polar Bears: Shift in Habitat in the Beaufort Sea Region

  • January 27, 2010 7:50 pm

I just came across a posting from e! Science News that I felt was worth noting. There are so many articles out there about climate change, shrinking ice in the polar regions, polar bears as poster children for endangered species and global warming…
It seems clear to me after reading this article that refers to a long term study ( 27 years ) by U.S. government Minerals Management Services in the Beaufort Sea area that there is a definite change in polar bear habitat. With this change comes an increase in human – polar bear contact. Shrinking ice ( polar bears preferred habitat ) means increased sightings of bears in water and on land and near people. This is definitely NOT good news for polar bears!
Please read this article and search more on the subject if this interests/concerns you at all. It sure concerns me. Polar bear – human contact to me equals more polar bears being killed…

Bald Eagles are an Endangered Species Success Story!

  • November 29, 2009 1:39 pm

It wasn’t long ago in our history that the number of bald eagles in the USA were rapidly in decline. This was primarily due to habitat loss ( this is such a HUGE threat to so many species! We need to share this beautiful planet of ours with all creatures. It belongs to all of us equally!), the use of the pesticide DDT and poaching. In 1967 the bald eagle was categorized as an endangered species and gained protection. That and the U.S. ban of DDT in 1972 has resulted in an amazing recovery of these magnificent birds.

A step in the right direction for circus elephants in India….

The thought of any animal being used for our entertainment, to sell products, to perform tricks for money is extremely depressing to me. I love shows like Cirque du Soleil teeming with willing humans who’ve honed their incredible acrobatic, comedic, dance and music skills to amaze us. In my opinion, with such mind boggling feats available there is no call for animals in entertainment-ever. This latest piece of news that came to me offers a glimmer of hope…a small shift in our thinking about animals as objects for our amusement or monetary gain?

Cuvier’s Gazelle…

  • November 12, 2009 12:48 pm

FUN FACT: They are nervous animals, quick to scare. They signal alarm by flicking their tail, leaping with head held high to signal a predator’s approach!
NOT SO FUN FACT: They were hunted for their skins, meat and for sport which lead to their dramatic decline in the early 20th century…now their numbers are dwindling mainly due to habitat loss from farming.

Did You Know…?

  • November 9, 2009 5:43 pm

…that the Panamanian Golden Frog represents good fortune in Panama? So much so that they are often shown on lottery tickets! :)
These little golden guys are threatened by habitat loss and other human activities such as illegal collection for the pet trade industry. “Project Golden Frog” is a collaborative effort by several US and Panamanian institutions to help protect them through captive breeding programs, field studies and education.
